Gullane No. 1 was by far the hardest course we played for several reason: (1) Extreme rough next to the fairways and (2) the high winds the day we played - about 25-40 MPH. Gullane No. 1 is used as a British Open Qualifying course and we could see why - long, tight, high rough and wind.

A few of the more interesting shots on Gullane No. 1 were:

  • A 3 wood downwind but uphill on #8, 332 yards, that was 30 yards short of the green.
  • A 9 iron downwind to #9, 151 yards, par 3.
  • A 7 iron from 175 uphill downwind to #13
  • A 4 iron downhill downwind from the tee on #17, 390 yards to 50 yards short.
  • A driver downwind to within 30 yards of #18 green, 355 yards.
In this photo notice how my pant legs are blowing in the wind (we have our backs to the wind). Although this hole is short (324 yards) it was a driver 5 iron to reach the green, which was downhill!

The 9th hole, a short par 3 played into a crosswind and even with a 6 iron I was only on the front edge. We were playing with a golf professional from Gleneagles, Tom, who was a very solid player.

We finally reach the 18th hole and enjoyed the course even though the rough was extreme, the wind very strong, and fairway narrow. In the background is the second fairway, which climbs up a hill to the green. If you do not hit the second fairway you will be in thick, high rough and will have to pitch out sideways to the fairway.
Bob, Tom, and I hate to leave the course even though the wind was blowing hard. It was truly a fun course to play even from the back tees.
