NARRATIVE OF BOOK 5 OF COTTON'S SCRAPBOOK

Page 1 Still in 1955, Mom and Pop find a new vacation cottage on Lake Lelandnau about 3 miles north of Leland. It is the "Bretzlaff shack" and it is deep in the wood and has a bunk house. A trail leads down to the beach without crossing the road like was necessary at the Stier cottage south of town. A short drive to the north takes us to the tip of Leelanau peninsula and Lighthouse Point. After the vacation, the Folks visit Tom and see his new Mercury station wagon.
Page 2 Granny comes to visit and gets her picture taken with Jim, Jan and Mike. Mom's Internations Club, from the YWCA, take a trip to Midland, MI to visit the Dow Chemical Gardens, which are quite beautiful. Dave get a "leave" from the Army in Pureto Rico and flies home. He is home on his 24th birthday, Mom bakes a cake, and both Tom and Jim and their families visit him. Everyone goes to the Lansing zoo to see the animals.

Page 4 Dave sends us a nice photo from Puerto Rico when he is stationed. Tom and Jim's families meet in East Lansing and the folks put in a new bathtub and sink in the 2nf floor bathroom. Dave stops over on his way to his new assignment at Ft. Leavenworth, KS where he will be a company clerk. Birchman Drive is finally upgrades with a new surface.
Page 5 The boys buy Mom & Pop and new lawnmower for their anniversity which should make it easier to cut the grass than the old reel-type one. You many wonder why the boys bought them a lawermower. Well, Pop still has to cut the grass and with his "iron leg" and the old reel mower it would be quite a job. Besides, they had just about everything they wanted and buying a gift for them got more difficult as the years went on. The annual trip to Leland is great as they have a different and better place to stay. Everyone is glad to be back in Leland and relaxing.
Page 6 Pop has the Leland Enterprise article on their arrival and the Parkers for vacation. Watson catches a great 20" bass and Little Alice get the award for "most fish". Once again, Pop comes up with some excellent scenery shots in and around Leland, expecially Fishtown, one of his favorite photo-shoots.
