PANAMA PAGE 2
I made a rough sketch of the fortress the shows how it was located on the peninsula.
I am not sure why the construction of one of the moats empties into the sea but I am sure they have a good reason. Most of these photos were taken after much clean up work had already been done.
This cannon protects the beach below, which is a significant drop, almost straight down, below. The best way to attack this fort was from the rear by land and the defenses were heavy there.
One of the more over grown moats that still required much "hacking". Naturally, as the owner of the camera, I got to have my photo taken alone.
Another posed shot of me and my machete. I did manage a shot of my "buddies" but I have no idea what their names are today.
The courtyard at the seaward end of the fort was nice groomed at this time. I can only imagine how it looked before the clean up started after a hundred years or so of neglect.
A view from the point of land sticking out into the bay and looking toward the rear of the fort. The steepest part of the peninsula, shown on the next page, is the point where the sides leading down to the water were so steep that anyone working on it to clear brush had to go up and down by rope, hand-over-hand.
