GERMANY, JUNE-JULY, 1997 - BOOK 1/PAGE 1

Hamburg is a wonderful city to visit in Germany as it sits on the Elbe river and has one of the largest ocean ports in the world. There is so much to see that it would take weeks just to see it all. We were very fortunate in having such graces hosts as Christa and Hardy. To drive around the city and see all the building was a thrill. Our trip to Germany lasted three weeks and the time went too fast.

One of the best ways to see the sights is by a sight seeing bus, which Jeanne, Sally and I did the 2nd day after arriving. The buses all have an open top with side windows to protect the visitors from the wind. And even in summer the temperature can be a bit low so the side windows were much appreciated.

The city has almost unlimited sights to see and just being in a neighborhood that is so different from American cities it is like night and day.

There are many parks, some on the river and others by man-made lakes. Jeanne was kind enough to have her picture take by on of the many interesting building we stopped by on the tour.

Many building have spires on them but Jeanne's favorite is the building with the spiral stair case.

As a great sea port over many years, Hamburg was, and still is, home to many captains of ships traveling the seven seas. Hamburg always looked out for their captains and one way was to make sure that the captain's widows were taken care of. On the left below is an small alley that leads back to on the apartment buildings where the widows stayed and were taken care of. As you enter the alley you can look up and see a window of one of the restored widow's apartments.

The apartment was on either the 2nd or 3rd floors and the stairs were very narrow and spiral in nature. We both wondered how the old ladies were able to manage the stairs in their old age.
