We stopped at Weikersheim, just to the northwest of Creglingen to see the castle. This castle has a drawbridge, a gate, a keep and a large hall of armor and costly interior decoration. We could not imagine the amount of money that would be needed today to construct and decorate such a building. And to do so in the 1600-1700 period, well, it is beyond belief.

On the left, Jeanne poses in the garden behind this castle by the fountain. Jeanne and I were not the only ones taking photos as Hardy records Jeanne and Sally by the rear of the castle. Every castle we visited had gardens that must take tens of gardeners to maintain.

The entrance to the castle was well protected with a large gate in the stone wall. The armor hall was huge and had murals painted on both side in the upper half of the wall.

I simply could not imagine a fire place as large or as ornate as this one but considering the size of the hall it fitted in perfectly. The clock, unfortunately, was not working but I am sure it was amazing to be around on the hour.

The painting in relief of the elephant has an interesting story. It seems that the artist who did the elephant had never actually see one and was using eye witness accounts to develop the creature. He got it almost right! On the right is a water closet (toilet) that emptied directly down into the moat.

On our way from Weikersheim to Rothenburg we passed through several small towns and the one on the left was most interesting. Someone has a house with the tower that actually has a tunnel under part of the house that opened into the courtyard.
