EAST LANSING HIGH SCHOOL
I attended East Lansing's (Michigan) High School from 1945-1950, 7th through 12th grades, when I graduated that June. My two older brothers, Tom (now deceased) and Jim (now deceased) both complete High School there too. And all the Thomson boys played sports in High School. We all played basketball and there was a Thomson on the school team from 1944 throught 1950. Tom was an All-State Center his senior year. At that time he was 6'1" tall and considered tall in baskball. Jim played on the team from 1946-1948 and I played on the team from 1949-1950. I was elected team captain my senior year. I also played football as an end and place kicker. My senior year I got the nickname of "Golden Toe" for my consistancy in extra points.
I also played baseball but only for one year as I found out quickly that I could not bat against the pitchers, i.e. I struck out every time I was at bat. I also went out for track and ran the mile. Never did much good and just failed by a few points (You got points for the place you finished in a meet) to win my track letter. I believe it was my last year in school that I played on the golf team. Again, not to good at it but did make the team and played in most matches. My only accomplishment in golf was being the low scorer for our team in the State qualifing tournament, a 82 I believe, and this was my best score of the year.
I was also class president my Sophomore year and served on the Student Council several years. I am not sure how I made it out of High School as I rarely studied. Some classes, like English, I just could not get the hang of it. My writing and spelling was terrible and still is today.
The photo below are the only two remain photos of my High School days. I did have a scrapbook with many newspaper clipping of my sport's days but it was lost while I was in the Army from October, 1954 to October, 1956.
