Christmas 1990 and everyone is with us again. This will be the last Christmas together for some time as we are retiring in June of 1991 and heading out for a year long trip on the road throughout the USA and Canada. Then we will head back to South Carolina, find a builder, and have our new home built.
For now everyone is busy opening presents.
No, those are not all Sam's presents. On the right is probably the last "full clan" photograph we shall see for a long time, perhaps 3-4 years. But we shall see.
One final photograph of all Jeanne's grandkids. On the right is my final Columbia Gas photograph. It will be strange not to go to work anymore but I am sure I can handle it.
So, in April, 1991 we put our home on the market. The first several months there are only one or two people that are interested. The realtor wants to list our home for about $105,000 but we think it is worth much more. So we insist on a listing of $110,000. About a month before I retire I am in the hospital for work on my nose to stop the loud snoring. Jeanne come to visit me after visiting hours and told me to "Just sign this and don't ask any question!" It is an offer to buy our home for MORE THAN IT WAS LISTED FOR! Naturally, I sign and the house is sold.
We place all our things, well almost all, in storage, move into our camper and rent a space in a city campground about a mile from work. A friend will pick me up and take me back each day. In the meantime, Jeanne has driven our cars to Easly, SC where she and her son, Larry, will put them up on blocks in two storage sheds.
So, I go to my retirement party and then we head out on your "A YEAR ON THE ROAD". Please continue on to see our advantures on the road HERE!
