A YEAR ON THE ROAD IN OUR MOTORHOME
BOOK 1/PAGE 8
All to soon we pull away from the glacier and head back to the port at Glacier Bay. On the way we make another stop to offload and pick up some kayakers. Not sure I would want to be in their "shoes" as it can get pretty darn cold at night and the days are no picnic either, especially if overcast and no sun. Rain would be even worst but I know they plan for all possible weather conditions.
June, 1991 to June, 1992
Back at Glacier Bay we take in the local shopping mall in Gustavus, which is where the resort is located. Puffins abound in and around Glacier Bay. They are "cute" and fun to watch in the water but being rather small in a large boat, they can be difficult to see unless they are very close.
The trip back is great as our pilot takes a different route due to some weather moving in.
The route back is really nice. We follow the water most of the way and see some great Alaskan scenery.
We continue up the river towards Skagway and suddenly, it appears.
It is amazing how small Skagway is from the air but rather large on the ground. The next and last thing we do in Skagway is to take the White Pass Railroad to the summit, a nice long ride up to the pass where miners treked over to get to the gold fields.
At times there is barely enough room for the train but, as always, just enough. The railline follows the river most of the way to the top.
