A YEAR ON THE ROAD IN OUR MOTORHOME
June, 1991 to June, 1992

BOOK 1/PAGE 7

We continue on our journey to the glaciers at Glacier Bay National Park. We take one more look at Reid Glacier and then head for the best glacier in the park, Margerie Glacier. You can, in the photo on the right, see the area where it is located. It is just behind the dark outcropping.

About an hour before we arrive at the Margeric Glacier the ship stops by the shore and offloads some kayakers. This is common here as many people come here to kayak and camp out. Then about a week later, they have made arrangement in advance as to what day, the ship will be back to pick them up.

Just around the "bend" now and then, there it is! What a glacier - it is huge! It must be 7-10 stories high where it meets the water.

As we approach the glacier, the cliffs near it are over flowing with birds nesting on shear drop offs. The noise is unbelievable and then number of birds is, well, uncountable.

The captain will take us close to the glacier so we can, hopefully, see some "calving", where pieces of the glacier fall off into the water. Some times there are huge pieces and then everyone onboard gasps in amazement.

Finally, the ship gets close and stops. No engines running, only the conservations of the people onboard and the occassional noice when a piece of the glacier falls into the water. In the photo on the right you can see one of the newly "born calves".
