A YEAR ON THE ROAD IN OUR MOTORHOME
BOOK 5/PAGE 9
We pass through Provo and Salt Lake City on our way north to Idaho to see the Craters of the Moon National Monument. The lake is, well, just a lake. We don't stop to go swimming as it really is not warm enough. One place of interest on your way north is the huge area where old government airplanes are stored that are no longer operational. But we can get up close to most of the planes we knew as we were growing up.
June, 1991 to June, 1992
Craters Of The Moon National Monument is actually a lava bed. But the formations are something to see. The Monument is 75 square miles of a Great Rift Zone the once spouted lava and ash creating monoliths. The holes in the lava were caused by trees that the lava encased. The trees later died, rotted and left the holes. We had to be very careful on the hike as the lava could be very sharp in spots. Not only were there holes but some actually formed tunnels.
We head east to Wyoming for Jackson Hole. Little do we know that the road over the Teton Mountains is almost straight up with many switchbacks. Well, the grade is about 12% and the camper is in the lowest gear. We slowly inch up the road, about 10 MPH if that. We were worried that the engine would over heat. Never so worried before but we make it to the top and then ..... it is down. This time we use the engine to brake us and we have no brake failure here thank goodness!
The Teton is one site to see in the west. It is just to the south of Yellowstone and a very short drive. Jackson Lake is formed because of a dam and, never the less, it is very impressive. While we were there the temperature one morning was 28 degrees! David was going to play golf but decided the sightseeing was the thing to do.
We leave the Teton behind us and follow the Green River through the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. So many lovely sight in Utah and Wyoming. We hate to leave.
The valley of the Green River and Flaming Gorge is lined on both sides with mountain, some of which have snow on them. We stop for the night at a campground were the only campers are us and one other. During the evening several Elk stop by for "dinner". The road in Flaming Gorge rose up 1,700 feet and from the top the gorge was a sight to see.
