NARRATIVE OF BOOK 3 OF COTTON'S SCRAPBOOK

Page 1 East Lansing and Leland in 1951. Four generations of Thomson are shown along with Ruth returning from a trip to Cleveland on a plane of that era, i.e. no jets, just propellers. Dave and his basketball teammate in high school, Dean Stoppel and one of Pop's many "sunset at Leland harbor" are included.
Page 2 1951. Some great snaps of Leland Harbor, especially of the Gulls flying, by Pop along with fishing trophies. Dave won his Freshman Basketball letters this year at Michigan State College, soon to be Michigan State University, beating out 80 other "walk-ons" for a spot on the Freshman team.
Page 3 A snow storm leave drifts around East Lansing in late 1951. Pop gets a new Chevy and Tom gets a new job and moves to Novi, Michigan. Pop and Mom visit their friends, the LuDucs, for New Years day.
Page 4 Dave goes along with the Stoppels to Florida on spring break and on Mothers' day, Mom and Pop visit the Signa Nu fraternity house or Bircham Drive just up the street from their home on Grove Street.
Page 5 Still in 1952, a trip to Leland again for a vacation, the Grove Street house gets new front steps and Jim and Jan get married in Traverse City in August.
Page 6 A huge remodeling job on the Grove Street house - the kitchen is completely redone to make things easier on Mom. A nice photo or Jim and the staff he worked with at the Oscoda Air Force Base and several photographs of Harbor Springs, Michigan, where Dave worked one summer at the exclusive Harbor Point Club House.
Page 7 Jim and Jan honeymoon in a cottage on Lake Huron. Pop, Mom and Dave visit Jim and Jan at their Oscoda home as do Jan's entire family, Dr. Lemom, Helen, Marty and Ted. Dave helps build the Sigma Nu 1952 homecoming display. All three boys went to Michigan State College and join the Sigma Nu Fraternity, which generally was known as the "jocks" for all the athletics that were "brothers". When Dave was a "brother" most of the varsity basketball team, a good portion of the football team and various swimmers and track members were in the fraternity. This was also the year that the Folks got a new 1953 TV!
Page 8 While Dave grabs a snack, Pop rests in bed with a sore back. Tom's family in 1953 is shown along with Jim and Jan's 1947 Ford. A turkey dinner is had by all on Mike's 1st birthday. Dave double dates with his Sigma Nu friend, Howard Adams and the Pop finally gets Mom a new, automatic washing machine.
Page 9 The spring of 1953 finds Ruth and Cottom back home from the Sigma Nu Fraternity Buffet. A bit later, Dave, his girl friend, Nany, Howard Adam, his closest fraternity brother, and his date, Joan enjoy some double solitaire in Pop's front room. The boys with family return for a celebration so Pop takes a few snaps on the front porch steps. Pop's Mother always seems to be around and this time she has a new hairdo.
Page 10 Once again it is time for the annual trip to Leland for vacation. Kayo catches a nice fish while Little Alice and Watson enjoy a swim. Ralph and George and his family visit East Lansing and we see Jim's home while he is at Oscoda Air Force Base in Michigan.
Page 11 Jim gets the news he will be stationed in Korea for awhile so Jan and Mile will stay with the Folks for a bit. Mike gets his first haircut and doesn't seem to mind one bit. Pop gets a new 1953 Chevy with powerglide and another Christmas is upon us again.
