GERMANY, JUNE-JULY, 1997 - INTRODUCTION - PAGE 2
About every other day, Christa would take us to the local outdoor market where she purchased food the next day or so. This was another wonderful place with inviting sights, sounds, and smells, like the fresh bread, flowers, and cheeses. It seems that there are many small, outdoor markets like this in Hamburg where many people do their shopping.
We think that many Germans shop every other day or so as their refrigerators are small compared to American ones. But the food was much better.
You can buy flowers, vegetables, cheeses and many other food items at the market.
Christa and Sally took us to see Hamburg's world famous harbor where ships from all over world come to pick and offload merchandise. Sally and I are on the left and Jeanne and I are by the sightseeing ship which operates daily for cruises around the harbor which is HUGE!
The ship on the left is another cruise ship that leaves before ours. On the right we relax on the deck and enjoy the sights as they go by.
Hamburg has one of the world's largest dry docks which has murals painted on its side. The view of part of the harbor is excellent.
Container ships arrive and leave each day. Some are huge beyond belief! On the right is a sailing ship that plied the seas years ago and we took the tour of it.
