I met Jeanne through her Christian Date Club, which advertised in the Columbus Dispatch. We dated for some time even though I gaffed on our first date by telling her, I had never dated a grandmother before!. Jeanne has two sons and a daughter by a previous marriage. Her youngest son, Terry and his wife Kathy, have a daughter, Holly, and a son T.J, and now live in Phoenix. Her other son, Larry and his wife, Janet, have three boys, Aaron, Josh and Thomas and live in South Carolina. Jeanne's daughter, Sherrie, has two daughters, Tammy and Armada, and they live in Columbus, Ohio.
Jeanne and I were married on March 29, 1979 in Columbus, Ohio. I became an instant grandfather and have always enjoyed Jeanne's children and their children. After our wedding in Columbus, we flew to Jekyll Island, Georgia for our honeymoon and we couldn't have picked a nicer place. Jekyll Island has all the things we enjoy: ocean, beach, beautiful scenery, lots of wild birds & animals, and a mild climate.
Everything was going along fine until we rented bicycles and road around the island, well, road around until Jeanne's bike developed a flat tire and we ended up "wheeling" our bikes back to the rental office. We did manage 9 holes of golf with rented club and found the course quite nice.
One other problem occurred when we went for a short run on the beach and Jeanne left her running jacket on the beach as it was rather warm. We didn't realize that the tide was coming in and when we returned to our starting point we found the entire area under a foot of water and her jacket was gone! This was her jacket with lots of race emblem switched on it and it really was a sad day for both of us as there was no way it could be replaced.
The photograph on the left is my very favorite photograph of my very favorite lady!
A funny incident happened on the plane ride to the island. We had to transfer planes and take a smaller one to Jekyell Island. At the transfer airport we watched as the pilot of the smaller plane, actually a two engine large plane, was on the wing filling the gas tank with what looked like a 5 gallon can. It took several of these before he was satisfied he filled the tank. Needless to say, we joked about this all the way to Jekyll Island but we each hoped he did put enough gas in the tank.
As you can tell, we both enjoyed being outdoors on the beach by the ocean.
Back in Columbus, we enjoyed a small wedding cake, baked by Jeanne's daughter-in-law, Janet Eichman. We did manage to get up to see my parents in East Lansing and they certain enjoyed meeting Jeanne.
After we were married I computerized her date club which went from about 125 members up to about 1,000 at the maximum. Needless to say, without our Apple II computers and dual disk drives, the club could not have grown that large. To celebrate the 1st anniversary of the club Jeanne organized a party at the Columbus' Blacklick Woods Park and about 50 people showed up. Jeanne was very proud of her club and the over 30 couples meet and married through her club.
