A YEAR ON THE ROAD IN OUR MOTORHOME
June, 1991 to June, 1992

BOOK 1/PAGE 2

The Badlands are a unique place in United States. It is a great place to just stop and hike a bit. Erosion has changed the landscape over eons and the Badlands got its name from settlers who traveled through this region in the 1800s.

Just about anywhere you go in the Badlands the scenery changes but always exciting to see. Another national treasurer is Mount Rushmore. It seems so small in photographs and so huge when you are there.

Some where on our journey through South Dakota we ran across the Dinosaur National Park where "digs" are still going on to examine the remains of these great creatures. And then we arrived at Devil's Tower, which was the remains of an extinct volcano which was worshipped by the indians as they believed that a giant bear made the marks on the outcrouping.

Jeanne and I walked around the tower and it is amazing to look up and see the crevices which really look like claw marks.

After South Dakota we headed for THE park - Yellowstone. But first we did have to cross the Rocky Mountains. Fortunately for us Yellowstone was not crowded and fairly easy to get around. The campgrounds were close to most of the things we wished to see, including Old Faithful naturally.

The park has many bison, not bufflo, elk, deer and other animals, all roaming free. Many times the bison will be near or on the road and then everyone in the area stops for photographs. I was amazed at how many people get out of their cars and approach the bison, which can be very dangerous and unpredictable. One of the main sites to visit in the park is the Upper Falls, a spectacular sight in the spring and summer.
