A YEAR ON THE ROAD IN OUR MOTORHOME
BOOK 2/PAGE 1
Chena Hot Springs, east of Fairbanks, was in interesting place but not one that you could spend a great deal of time at. The huge pile of Moose antlers piled there was impressive but we both hate to see animals killed just for sport. We hoped that this was not the case. On the way back to Fairbanks we stopped by the road to take a hike up to Angel Rock. Not really sure why it was named this but I can tell you it was a long steep hike.
June, 1991 to June, 1992
The view from Angel Rock was great as you can see by the photo on the left. On the right, well, that is about as close I can get to the edge on anything that is higher than 10' in the air.
After Angel Rock we continue on back to Fairbanks but were fortunate enough to spot a moose in the small lake about 100 yards off the road. To our surprise, a baby moose followed his mother into the lake and across (the photo on the left just under the tree branch).
So far as we know this mother and baby moose on the road are not the same ones we saw in the lake. Up here everyone stops for moose on the road. One because the moose are respected here and two, they are huge and can do quite a bit of damage to a car if provoked.
Back in Fairbanks we went to the airport to catch a plane to Barrow where we would stay overnight at the Top Of The World Hotel. The next day we would catch a plane to Prudhoe Bay to see the oil/gas fields. The landscape we flew over was like nothing we had seen before. It is a wonder how the pipeline was constructed.
Upon arriving in Barrow we (all the tourists) we taken into a building where the eskimos performed traditional songs and dances for us. Although this was the middle of July the temperature was about 50F, about as warm as it gets in Barrow.
