NARRATIVE OF OUR TRIP TO GERMANY IN 1997
Page 1
We arrive at the Hamburg airport where Sally and her father, Hardy, pick us up. We drive back to their home, which is very lovely. Hardy and Christa are wonderful hosts and we enjoy their company and the excellent meals they serve

Christa takes us to the market she shops in almost everyday. I am not sure but it seems that most Germans shop daily or every other day. Later on Christa, Sally, Jeanne and I go the Hamburg's harbor and take a tour of this massive complex.

Hamburg's town hall is several hundreds of years old and the town just restored many parts of it. It is once again opened to the public. We then visit the space needle of Hamburg and get some excellent views of this city from high above.

Back to the mall on another day for shopping and lunch. The mall is quite different from American malls in that they have all kinds of small food shops selling cheese, meats, vegetables, and bread by the loaf or slice. A day later the Meyer-Wagens take us to Timmendorfer Strand, a resort town on the East Sea or in German, OSTSEE.

More of Timmendorfer Strand and then, on Sunday, we visit the famous Hamburg open market at the harbor. Here, hundreds of vendors have booths to sell just about anything from meat, fish, flowers, small trees, vegetables, fruits, and handmade items. The crowds are huge and it starts at 7AM and only on Sundays. Seems as if all of Hamburg comes to buy.

A few more photographs of the Open Market showing people carrying home their purchases in boxes. Then on to a Hamburg church (sorry, don't recall which one it is) that has famous people, like Bach, buried in a sub-basement.
