NARRATIVE OF BOOK 5

USA Map Route

Canada/Alaska Map Route

Here are two maps that will show you the route we took, more or less as the maps are not detailed enough to show the actual highways.
Page 1 It is the end of March and we are in Arizona visiting Walnut Canyon National Monument just easy of Flagstaff. From there we head west on I-40 to Bullhead City, just across the border from Laughlin, Nevada where all the casinos are located. On our 13th anniversary Jeanne hits a quarter slot machine for $605. Then the first week in April be head back east to the Grand Canyon.
Page 2 There is so much to see at the Grand Canyon that several days are needed. On our 2nd day we go the the South Kaibab trailhead where you can take the path down to the bottom of the canyon. The trail is 7.3 miles down to Phantom Ranch where overnight guests stay. They get there by mule train, a long hard day in the saddle. We walk down 1.4 miles to the Cedar Ridge which is 1,300 feet below the rim. It is an hour down and and hour and one half back up but well worth it.
Page 3 It is sad to leave Zion as it is such a wonder place to hike. But we head toward Bryce Canyon, one that we have hear and read about. It is suppose to be a site to behold. We find a campground about 15 minutes from Bryce and enjoy the daily drive as we pass through Red Canyon, smaller the Bryce but very pretty.
Page 4 We think we have seen it all in Bryce Canyon on the Fairyland trail but then we find another trail, the Queen's Garden. Again, the formations are outstanding! This is another national park that is a must see.
Page 5 A few more photographs of Bryce Canyon and then we drive Capital Reef National Park. On the way we briefly stop at the Natural Bridge Park.
Page 6 Mesa Verda, meaning Green Table, is next on our trip log. This is a preserved site of the indians who lived here long ago. Their living huts and lodges remain for all to see and learn from. They, like the indians at Monument Valley, leave petroglyhs on the rocks to record that they were here.
Page 7 The Arches National Park is the final part of our Year On The Road Scrapbook and a better place to end the book could not be found. The park has about 2,000 arches and we tried to see as many as we could. We did make the three mile hike to see the world famous Delicate Arch.
Page 8 Just a few more arches and then on to Canyonland National Park.
Page 9 We head north through Salt Lake City on our way to the Carter Of The Moons National Monument, a fantistic 75 mile square of old lava flows. Then over the Grand Teton where the road up is so steep we don't think we will make it. But the Travelmaster, with its Ford engine in lowest gear, finally reaches the top. After a few days in the Teton we head east to the Flaming Gorge.
Page 10 To the Eastern part of Colorado and a detour around the Rocky Mountains National Park as the pass road is closed due to snow. Then we sadly have to end our trip. But the future is ahead in South Carolina and I, for one, can't wait to get there to start playing golf again.
